Wow. i have never encountered a snake while up in the trees, just on the groud. Were you suprised? Or did you notice it while it was a distance away and watched it come closer. Either way i would have been out of there quick smart. (unless the snake was right near me and then apparently you have to stay dead still, so they say)
Around my place we get the Brown Snake (Pseudonaja textilis) and the Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) quite often during times. Nasty things to be respected they are.

It looks like a Texas Rat Snake, harmless to humans, very rough on mice and rats.

Interesting, I to have come across a snake whilst climbing in queensland.
I was happily ascending a single rope in a rainforest fig when my mate (already in the canopy) says from above "when you get a few metres higher just swing around to the back of the tree"
Why, I had to press him finally he says there is a snake there and you'll get a good shot of it"
I said "bugger that I've got a good zoom lense."
I climbed higher and took this photo.
A carpet python generlly harmless but enough to get the heart racing. upon further climbing I found a possum in a hollow that the snake was probably after.

Well, I few clarification points on the snake encounter. The snake was climbing on the bushes in my backyard. I was not on any trees. Moss IDed correctly as a Texas Rat Snake. It eats birds too!

It appears that since I do not have a cat anymore (poisoned with contaminated cat food from China). The rats and birds from the nearby ranch are visiting my yard more frequently and the snake figure out where the best pickings are found now in my back yard!

I was impressed by how it climbs straight up along the small branches and it stabilizes itself balancing the tail and front parts to cross from branch to branch across the air without any support from below. Very cool and it was not afraid of me. I took pictures about 2 feet from its face and it would not blink or tried to escape. I even tried the pressure water hose sprayer on her and she was just annoyed but did not leave the place until it was able to warm up again. Later on it climbed over the roof of a small bird house, coiled up and stayed there waiting for its next meal to come by. It was not around there the next day but I would not be surprised that she is living under the patio deck now that there is not cat around to bug her.
