You can indeed make yourself up a foot loop. You can also buy a stiched up one at SherrillTree like the one you used at the school. Go to the their web site and go to the recreational section. They should have it listed there if you decide to get one pre-made.

We had a guy in a rope class who called them that too. On the second day of the class the instructor brought him a BOX of them!

To answer your question, tree climbers who use footloops for ascending on a DRT climbing system use a simpler version of what's shown in the Rope Rescue 2002 document. It's a sling made from cord joined with a double fisherman's knot. The sling is attached to the running end or down rope with a prusik knot. A double footloop can be made with the same sling configuration except the footloops are formed with a triple crown knot as shown in Tengu's tips on the New Tribe web site.

For SRT ascent tree climbers typically use a mechanical ascender system, there are many possible configurations. Some tree climbers use a friction hitch setup similar to the Purcell system for SRT ascent.

Also try the spanish bowline. I like it better than the triple crown.
