Database for climbing trees. was created by treeman
It has been proposed to build a database for climbing trees where a climber can climb in peace and not fear being challenged by authorities. I have decided to take this topic to its own thread for discussion.

So I have a concern and a request around this kind of database.
Concern: Will the trees on the data base be subjected to abuse like over-climbing?

Request: Do not post sensitive trees like champion trees (the largest trees of their kind) or ancient trees like the redwoods. These are old folks in the tree world and do not need us humans subjecting them to change or trauma from use.

What are your thoughts around a public database for climbig trees? What are your concerns and ideas?

Peter and anyone else following this.

While I mark specific trees ocasionally, I also mark general areas, or a point within an area. My climb sites are all wilderness areas, and that means one would be presented with a large number of trees to select from.

As far as overclimbing, how many have climbed Nimrod and Diana to date. Part of the deal at TCNC is a wilderness ethic code. That means, especially, to protect the trees you climb.

State champions, and historic trees should be left out as you say, as well as trees on private property, unless one is the owner of the trees he is presenting.

Publishing will not be an issue, I'm cheap. I am planning to have a membership base to access the data. So that should help out.

You have good input here.

The token fee idea warms my heart. I like it. It’ll keep the riff-raff at bay. ;)

If you compile area maps as stand-alone pieces of software it would be pretty neat stuff. Sounds like a great project.

I have very little to offer but I’m itching to compile a package of info for your data base of a few posted Wildlife Management Areas in my area that have proved to be deserted enough to do climbing in.

Treeman’s concerns are right on target...
Controlling the information is going to be tricky. Kind of a double edge sword.

I'm not sure the status of my isp account would let me collect any fee. I was thinking more of, heck I don't know now you threw me...I really dont want to lift that rock again...

As far as a map collection goes, I've got a neat little tool for that, though I'm working out the bugs...

Lance, I think taking the sign might be a good idea. When you get the sign home, get a hot tub of water and bring it to a boil. Gently lower the sign into the water for a few minutes. Now bring it out and let it cool before handling. You now have a poached sign.

Ah the good old days. Now we tax only the poor and middle, and have welfare socialism only for the rich.

Friend of mine finally inspired me and I now have my own treename =P

I Lance are now known as OptimusClimb! =P

The rain kept me from taking a picture of the champion tree. I'll get it this week. The weather seems to be drying out here for a moment.

Climb On!

Ponderosa and Electrojake mentioned "Hayduke," which meant nothing to me. So I did a search and discovered the books written by Edward Abbey. The reviews on Amazon were outstanding, so I decided to check my local library for his books.

I checked out Abbey's first book, Desert Solitaire, but haven't had time to start it yet. My "significant other" did, though, and she said, "This is a book to savor!"

How on earth could I not have heard of Abbey?!

Better get to yout libraries and bookstores, folks.

Peace.

Jim

LANCE!

Cant get you by U2U. Send me an e-mail...the button should work.

Guys, looks like great minds think alike. I am up and running now, and should have a page to (at least) submit coords by end of week. Lance is slaving away too.

I've been too busy programming to read the messsage boards! Good thing the weather stinks, I'm not tempted to drop it to go climb!

Climb Safe!
