Bareroots/bearfoot . Here is a link for another bulleting board were you can post and read stuff if you become a member. It is mostly arborists and tree maintenance people but some of them do recreational tree climbing on the side. They have a lot of expertice because climbing trees is what they do for living. i'll give both a try.

I'm thinking of getting my chainsaw and climbing tickets. I do some small scale tree surgery on the side but would like to pull a bit more in (don't worry, i harvest the acorns and beech nuts each year). the climbing ticket would also be a spring board to starting a grove over here. I've just seen an article in the daily telegraph about a couple of arborists that have started to run recreational tree climbing courses in wales. but the lakes is a good drive away.

I'm looking for published info on tree climbing. what was the name of the couple of books published on it. was it the climbers companion? who was the author?

Another one is
Recreational Tree Climbing – A Newcomer's Guide
by Dick Flowers
It is about USD7.50.

New Tribe has both, but you probably can find them over there.

I looked at the link you provided--looks good--they look like nice chaps! I'd trust them.

I saw some New Tribe saddles in the pictures (great saddles!); also there is a link from there to New Tribe.

The one picture where I could see the friction knot looked as if the knot was a tautline hitch, but I'm not sure. That knot apparently still gets some use, but the one in vogue here is the Blake's hitch. There are some more "advanced hitches," but the Blake's is mighty fine!
