I have an idea how to do it. Only for trees that are in established groves, or in wild trees that are not notable or champion trees and are in very out of the way places. Placed very high, not easily reached. I'll present at the rendezvous, people can give it thumbs up or down. If I decide it's not good enough after I make the prototype I'll bury the idea before the rendezvous.

Proposed requirements are:
1. Visually and physically harmonious with canopy habitat
2. Allows for growth of the tree
3. Not damaging to tree or wildlife
4. Not consumable by wildlife
5. Will not breakdown under sun and weather etc.

Info on marker:
1. Contains date of placement
2. Measured height from ground at date of placement
3. GPS coordinates
4. Diameter of trunk or branch at location of placement on date of placement

This may be scientifically useful in addition to being fun for geocaching.

This is been a hot discussion. I'm not sure if it's a good thing, but the first treeocache has been hung. You can talk about it at TOC 001 Thread .

I don't like the idea of leaving the caches only in established groves. Mainly because in the overall grand scheme of things, there just aren't that many groves. It would be really limiting.

Keep in mind that I put the cache up BEFORE all this discussion took place.

Moss- I like your proposed requirements. When I chose the box I chose, I opted for bright orange. I was simply thinking of ease of finding it. I didn't even consider the idea of making it blend in. I did abide by the rest of your requirements. My friends kept trying to get me to put a chocolate bar in there!

Icabod- I didn't think about the squirrell chewing cords thing. I'm just gonna cross my fingers on that one!

As far as leaving no trace? Good point. How does geocaching tie in with all that. I think part of it is that I will not hesitate to go take the thing back when it's no longer being used.

It'll be interesting to see what becomes of all this...

love
nick
