Rendezvous Splicing Project Ideas was created by nickfromwi
Hey folks, I know many of you here have taken the splicing class at the Rendezvous. I'm getting ready for this year's class and I'm wondering- what would be a great thing to make? In the past I've done 16 strand split tails, which I think are a GREAT thing to make, even for someone who has never used one. I tried eye-eye split tails last year, and that went fine...though I didn't think it was perfect.

What do you think would make a good beginners project that will give you an idea of the basics of splicing and also allow you to walk away with something that could be used the next day?

Hello Nick
I enjoyed the three different projects we completed in the Canton MS Rendevous and the Colorado one. They were fun, they did not take a tremendous amount of time and the rewards is that I am still using them today. The Split tails are still in great working condition and the two rigging pieces that we did have done some useful work too. So, either one of those projects are great entry for people that want to get the Baic of Splicing. Looking forward to meet you guys again soon and do some more splicing. I guess is time for me to buy some basic splicing tools eh!.

I think anything with Tenex would be a good idea. I learned how to do that first and since then I have spliced friction savers, tethers for SRT, loopies which I use for trunk attachment while SRT, and whoopies... just for fun since I think they are pretty much useless. I taught the guys at work how to splice Tenex and knowing the locking brummel and a few other splices just got the ideas flowing.

By the way Nick, I tried that double tether thing that I pm'ed you about and had horrible luck so I gave up. I think that is beyond my abilities. I made up an anchor bridge instead.

I did Yalex eye-eye slings last year. I don't think yalex (tenex) is an ideal cordage for the average tree climber. It's good to learn on, but not great to actually use.

I'll try to think of something we could make out of it. Maybe Yalex friction savers?

Regarding your split split tail, let me know if you want help making yours, or if you want me to make one for you.

How is the anchor bridge working for you?

Why did you say that you dont think Tenex or Yalex is good for the average climber? About that split-tail, I doubt you could walk me through it. I was having problems with getting one end super short. I understand all of the splices needed, but spacing was the issue. It was very frustrating.

Anchor bridge has not been used yet. I just got time today to stich it up. Rain in the forcast, so it will have to wait till next week.

emr- I thought I responded to this weeks ago. WOOPS!

Yalex and Tenex I think are less than idea to use as general rigging slings (redirects, friction savers, etc) for tree climbers because the ropes are so loosely woven that it \"picks\" easily. It's not hard for a flake of bark or a twig to grab one tiny strand of the rope and pull it out, distorting the sling.

And for friction hitches, it's just polyester, so you have to be careful not to burn it.
