Climbing Trees for Kids

I live in Wisconsin and I want to plant an apple tree in my backyard that's good for children to climb. What varieties should I look at? I have a 2.5 year old and 8 month old twins (maybe I'll have another in the future) so hopefully it will have time to grow. Any advice is appreciated!

I would go for an apple variety that you'll be happy to eat. Most apples in the U.S. are so closely related that the trunk and branch forms are basically the same from variety to variety.

On top of what Moss shared, I also suggest a variety that is not dwarf or semi-dwarf.

You may even want an old reliable oldie like Gravenstein because they can get pretty big.

Large apple trees, if you do it right, should not mean a whole lot more time pruning, but will double or triple the branches to haul or chip.

It you were pruning for fruit alone, the pruning time would really multiply. But if it's to be climbed too, you are aiming for somewhere in the middle.
